AMS Setup & Filament Loading
The AMS (Automatic Material System) holds up to four spools and feeds whichever one your print calls for through a shared PTFE path into the toolhead.
Loading a spool
- Open the AMS lid and insert the spool so filament unwinds in the correct direction (the AMS will tell you if it's backwards during load).
- Feed the tip of the filament in until the AMS's internal rollers grab it — you'll feel it pull in on its own.
- Confirm on the Bambu Handy app or the printer's screen that the slot shows the correct material and color; set them accurately, since calibration and settings depend on this.
Materials that should skip the AMS
Warning: TPU (flexible) and PA/PA-CF (nylon) filaments are prone to jamming or excess friction in the AMS's long PTFE path. Load these direct-to-toolhead using the printer's side filament port instead.
First-time tips
- Keep a silica gel desiccant pack in each AMS bay — the enclosed AMS still lets in ambient humidity over weeks.
- If a spool feeds in slowly or struggles, check that the spool sits freely on its spindle and isn't binding against the AMS wall.
- After loading all four slots, run a filament calibration for any material you haven't used before — this measures flow dynamics specific to that spool.
See AMS Filament Jams & Loading Failures if a slot won't load or unload correctly.
