Print Quality & Calibration Guide
The X1 Carbon automates most of what an MK3S+ owner tunes by hand — but knowing what each calibration step actually does helps you pick the right one when quality drifts.
Flow dynamics (pressure advance) calibration
Run this per-filament, especially after switching to a new brand or color of the same material. It tunes how far ahead the printer starts slowing extrusion before a direction change, which directly affects corner quality and fine detail. Skipping this after a filament change is the most common cause of quality that "used to be fine."
Vibration compensation
Measures the frame's resonance and adjusts acceleration to avoid it — this is what keeps ghosting/ringing (see the Print Defect Visual Glossary) low without you needing to manually tune jerk and acceleration like on a MK3S+. Re-run it if you've moved the printer to a new location or surface.
First-layer inspection
The X1 Carbon's camera and LiDAR can flag first-layer issues automatically, but it's still worth watching the first layer yourself the first few times you use a new material — automatic detection catches gross failures, not subtle under-extrusion.
When to recalibrate
- After changing nozzle diameter or swapping to the hardened-steel nozzle
- After moving the printer
- If a specific filament suddenly strings or under-extrudes despite no recipe changes
- Periodically, every couple hundred hours, as general maintenance
Tip: If quality issues are isolated to one AMS slot's material rather than the printer overall, the problem is more likely that spool (moisture, tangle) than a calibration issue — see AMS Filament Jams & Loading Failures.
