Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Ender 3 a good first printer?
Yes, and it's likely the single most common "first printer" in the hobby — but be aware you'll do more manual tuning and maintenance than on an enclosed, more automated machine like Bambu Lab's. See Choosing Your First 3D Printer for a fuller comparison.
What's the difference between the Ender 3, Ender 3 V2, and Ender 3 Pro?
The Pro added a stronger power supply and a slightly upgraded bed surface over the original. The V2 added a color LCD, quieter mainboard, and a metal extruder as standard. Assembly and troubleshooting steps in this guide apply to all three unless a step specifically calls out a model.
Should I upgrade the firmware immediately?
Strongly consider it — see the thermal runaway protection gap covered in Error Codes & Safety. This is the one upgrade with genuine safety implications, not just quality-of-life ones.
Why is my printer so loud?
Stock Ender 3 units use standard stepper drivers, which are audibly louder than the silent drivers found on Prusa or Bambu Lab machines. Silent driver boards (or full mainboard upgrades) are a common and effective fix.
Can it print ABS or only PLA?
The stock hotend can technically reach ABS temperatures, but the lack of an enclosure makes ABS prone to warping and cracking from drafts. An enclosure (DIY or purchased) plus an all-metal hotend upgrade makes ABS/PETG/other engineering filaments much more reliable.
How often do I really need to re-level the bed?
On a stock machine, checking before every print is common practice, though many users find it holds for several prints once the machine and bed springs have "settled in." A BLTouch/CR Touch upgrade removes this step entirely.
