Maintenance & Upgrades
The Ender 3's huge community means nearly every weak point has a well-known, well-tested upgrade. This page covers routine upkeep first, then the upgrades worth prioritizing.
Routine maintenance (every 20-40 print hours)
- Lubricate the X/Z smooth rods with a light machine oil or PTFE-based lubricant — dry rods increase wear and can introduce ringing/wobble.
- Re-tension belts — press a belt with your finger; it should deflect slightly but feel taut, not slack.
- Check all bolts, especially the eccentric nuts on the wheels riding the aluminum extrusion and the gantry corner brackets — vibration works these loose over time.
- Clean the bed surface with isopropyl alcohol to keep adhesion consistent — skin oils from handling prints reduce grip.
- Inspect the PTFE tube (Bowden path) for wear or scoring at the hotend end; a worn tube contributes to under-extrusion and clicking issues.
Upgrade priority
| Upgrade | What it fixes | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| BLTouch / CR Touch | Eliminates manual bed leveling, compensates for a warped bed | Moderate |
| All-metal hotend | Enables higher-temp filaments (ABS, PETG, nylon) reliably | Moderate |
| Direct-drive extruder mod | Reduces stringing and improves flexible-filament printing | Moderate-hard |
| Silent stepper drivers | Dramatically reduces printer noise | Easy-moderate |
| Glass or PEI spring-steel bed | More consistent adhesion, easier part removal | Easy |
| Extruder upgrade kit (metal) | Fixes the stock plastic extruder body's tendency to crack | Easy |
Tip: If you only do one upgrade, make it thermal-protection-enabled firmware (see Firmware & Slicer Software) — it's free and addresses a real safety gap, not just a convenience issue.
Things to check after any upgrade
Any mechanical change (new extruder, new hotend, new bed surface) shifts your Z-offset and often your PID tuning. Re-level the bed, re-set Z-offset, and re-run PID autotune (M303) after any hardware change before trusting a print.
