Frequently Asked Questions

How is the MK4 different from the MK3S+?

The biggest changes are the Nextruder (redesigned direct-drive toolhead), loadcell-based first-layer calibration instead of a PINDA probe, input shaping for faster prints with less ringing, and a faster mainboard. See First-Time Setup & Calibration for the calibration workflow differences.

Can I use my old MK3S+ filament profiles?

You can, but PrusaSlicer's dedicated MK4 profiles already account for the Nextruder's direct-drive characteristics and input shaping — they're a better starting point than porting over old MK3S+ retraction/speed settings.

Do I need to manually adjust Live-Z?

No — the loadcell handles first-layer calibration automatically. There's no separate Live-Z knob workflow like on the MK3S+.

Is it safe to leave printing unattended?

The same general guidance as the MK3S+ applies: the thermal protection system is real, but no printer should be treated as fully unsupervised for very long runs — use common sense with ventilation and a smoke detector nearby.

What filament should I start with?

PLA, same recommendation as any FDM printer — see the Filament & Material Guide for the full comparison.
